Weekly Fishing Report for 27 June 2011

Fish Caught so far in 2008: 52792

Weather
A better week starting off cold and blustery but hot and sunny by the Sunday. Some rain and occasional thundery showers.
Water
Most of the lakes remain very clear but Blagdon is showing a little green algae at the moment. Despite the rain, levels at all the lakes are still well down and at Chew, falling. The brisk winds have stirred up the shallows at times but this soon clears when the wind decreases. The water temperature is around 17ºC.

Chew Valley
The unsettled weather early in the week kept many fishermen away but as the conditions improved numbers of anglers and catches improved. There have been some good evening rises although few fish seem to be falling to emergers, most are still being caught on Diawls, Crunchers and Buzzers fished sub surface with Boobies. Bank anglers have found fishing more difficult over the past couple of weeks as the fish seem to be congregating in the shallower waters of the East Shore and around the Island. But Nunnery, Walley and Woodford are still worth trying from shore. Early in the week the boat fishing was patchy. Saturday saw much better conditions but the fishing was still quite difficult. On the Sunday Bristol Water had organised the annual Teams Challenge competition. The day dawned hot and sunny, far from ideal conditions. As the day progressed the wind also increased making very difficult fishing conditions. However, the 42 anglers found plenty of feeding fish, often in only a few feet of water and a great day was had by all the contestants. 228 fish were caught, a rod average of 5.5. Fourteen anglers managed to bag a limit of eight fish and everyone caught. The fish were in superb condition, fighting well and averaging 2lbs 7ozs each. Winners for 2011 were Team Tightlines with five of the team of six taking limits bags. Mark Stevens’s catch of 22lbs 9ozs was top bag.
Blagdon
Although the weed growth on the lake is now very heavy, many anglers are finding lots of quality fish feeding around these natural larders. Reports of large numbers of feeding fish close to the weeds, especially early mornings and evenings. Dries, corixa and damsels all worth a try on floating lines. Beware of using droppers as hooked fish will charge into the weed and ‘spare’ hooks will make it impossible to get them out without rip offs. Cheddar water and Butcombe are also fishing well.
Barrow
The fishing at Barrows has been quite difficult especially during the daytimes, except on 3 where the mouse has been taking plenty of fish. However, during the late evenings the fish tend to feed much better, coming closer in shore and often feeding on the surface. Keep your flies small for best results
Litton
Both lakes are now clear again but still fairly well below top water level – the recent rains making little difference. A stocking has helped catches and the fish are of a much larger size. On the better days it is worth having a try with a dry fly especially when the sedges are hatching. Otherwise try very slowly fished nymphs or pulled lures.
