The superb fishing lodge, tackle shop, restaurant and bar was officially opened by the actor and angler Bernard Cribbins on April 25th 2000.

The lodge is proving very popular with fishermen and visitors alike. The restaurant is open for breakfast (during the fishing season), lunch, afternoon teas and dinner. The new leisure 'flagship' is a fitting complement to the world-famous venue and to the expertise of local anglers, who have had much international success. It is an integral part of the Company's policy to encourage public access, at the same time encouraging leisure activities.

It is the administrative headquarters for Bristol Water's recreations and conservation team. The strikingly attractive building provides an improved reception and interpretation area, a bigger tackle shop for anglers, an upgrading of the refreshment lounge and better weighing-in and safety features for the fishery.

The old Woodford Lodge, built in the 1950s, was showing its age and no longer met the standards of comfort or the facilities expected in a modern recreation centre. When it was built, there were only 12 fishing boats on the lake compared to 32 now, and it was too small to cater for large fishing competitions when 90 or more anglers congregate at the site.

Although the Lodge was also occasionally visited by birdwatchers and people enquiring about recreation at the lake, it was not otherwise open for general leisure visits.

The new lodge is open to all and will allow visitors an alternative view of the lake; its wildlife and the sailing dinghies and fishing boats out on the open water. The only other areas open to all are the two picnic areas on the northern shore, visited by 200,000 people a year.
